Viktoria Salma

About the Artist

Viktoria Salma’s artwork ranges from paintings and large-format drawings to altered Polaroids and paper sculptures. She explores the tension between the rational and the mystical, often represented by the relationship between human beings and nature, and is in search of the lost universal connection. To this end, she draws inspiration from myths and legends especially of indigenous animistic ideas, always searching for a resonance within herself.

Her works are created intuitively and evolve into a complete work through a dialogue with the surface, in which the elements of classical fuguration and modern abstraction are combined. The atmosphere in which they are created plays a special role. For example, her works in the ‘Tunkashila’ series were developed directly on site at a Lakota ceremonial site. For her latest project ‘Under the Ice’, she moved her studio to the forests in Sweden to immerse herself even more deeply in the feeling of being close to nature.

The development of her artistic style was influenced, among others, by the ‘Capriccios’ and ‘Pinturas negras’ by Francisco de Goya, works by Eugène Carrière, Egon Schiele, Francis Bacon, Cy Twombly and Rick Bartow.

Viktoria Salma, born in 1980, graduated University of Arts in Berlin in 2010 (Social and Business Communications) and worked in the marketing department of a big telecommunications company in Bonn, Germany, until 2022. Regular exhibition activity since 2020, both in Germany and internationally. Many of her works are in private collections.
